The State We’re In 2026 – Day 14 – Scotty

A bit of a down day today with my fellow traveller not feeling great. But I took a quick trip just north of the city centre to see The Big Scotsman.

Scotty is a 5 metres tall bravehearted soul standing near the Main North Road. He has been at the motel here welcoming weary travellers since 1963. Scotty is famous for being the first Big Thing in Australia, built by Adelaide artist Paul Kelly (the other Paul Kelly, not the Paul Kelly who told us “How to make gravy” or admitted, “I’ve done all the dumb things.”) This was before the Big Banana was built in 1964.  Paul Kelly also designed and built Larry the Big Lobster at Kingston SE.

The Scotsman and I both agree he is very impressive. It’s an aye for an aye.

By the way – why do bagpipers walk while they play? They are trying to get away from the sound.

Anyway, “Lang may yer lum reek!”

If you’re not Scottish, look it up.
