The Big Backyard – Western Queensland 2024 – Day 15 – Muttaburra

The fortnightly Winton markets were in the main street in the morning so before leaving I bought this lovely piece of Winton petrified wood… and picked up a local date…or two!

Farewell to Winton as we head south-east on the Landsborough Highway.

The roos were still about beside the highway….

…along with some bustards.

The Morella – Muttaburra Road

Low eroded range 20km from Muttaburra

Boundary check by a couple of bustards.

Mulla mullas (Ptilotus)

Barb the Muttaburrasaurus greets visitors into town. Muttaburrasausus bones have been found at both Hughenden and Muttaburra. Muttaburra is 120km north of Longreach.

The Big Chair at Muttaburra – the locals are very chair-atable.

Straw-neck ibis in full breeding plumage on the edge of town.

We drove a short way from town to the Thomson River at the Pump Hole.

Community Art project – this one at the Thomson River bridge. This fish has a few issues but nothing that can’t be ironed out.

Back in Muttaburra, we visited the excellent Interpretive Centre…

which is like the TARDIS and appears much bigger on the inside. Will this dinosaur and fossil centre become very popular? Remains to be seen.

The mighty Muttaburrasaurus in its hometown.

We called in to ask some locals where Mud Hut locality was. Its location is a mystery even to locals who had heard about it. My interest was that my Johns ancestors were here in the 1860s with a great great great uncle born at Mud Hut on the Thomson River.

The pub also has a wall with names of the local stations and properties.

Muttaburra also has a monument to its status as the geographical centre of Queensland.

Despite this, Muttaburra’s claim to fame is its famous dinosaur. There are several around town – this one oxidising away to extinction.

The Community Art project also has exhibits around town like this shearer named Ed…Ed Shearin’

Celebrating 130 years of schooling in Muttaburra. This guy has outlasted Dick and Dora, Cuisenaire rods, New Basics, and many other educational innovations that have come and gone. I asked this guy what his grades were and he replied “eh”.

We came across some baaaad company.

The road back to Longreach

Another bustard. Bustard count today 6.

Galahs at sunset

Another feral taken for grunted. Pigs are really hard to photograph.

50km to Longreach
