Way Away in WA 2023 – Day 39 – Banksias

A shorter drive south from Dongara to Jurien Bay via some wildflower Nature Reserves.

The Big Lobster at Dongara. It was a clawfully good replica.

Irwin River Lookout

Eucalyptus blossom

There were warning signs about wild bees that can attack and protect the nest. Luckily they behived for us.

Grey teal on the Irwin River

Pigface on the dunes

Fisherman’s Obelisk at Leander Point. Some amateur fishermen loved it so much here they turned professional but had trouble living off their net income.

The Harbour Master

Banksias on Nature Reserve between Arrowsmith and Eneabba

Petrophile

Drosera

Zamia cycad

I was asked for my thoughts on Eneabba so I suggested maybe some Dancing Queen and Waterloo.

Nature Reserve on kwongan (Noongar word for sandplain)

Firewood banksia (Banksia menziesii) is one of our favourites – starts red…..

and the stamens add an orange colour….

Another species of banksia that flowers low to the ground.

Clawflower (Calothalmus sp.)

Beekeepers Nature Reserve was loaded with bees and many wildflowers. We walked down the high clearance 4WD track that gets worse ( I was warned not to try it) . There are limestone caves in the area.

Dryandra (Banksia sessilis) was the dominant species here.

Milkmaids

Cowslip orchid

Catspaw

Lake Indoon

Dynamite Bay at Green Head before driving to Jurien Bay for the night.
