Way Away in WA 2023 – Day 37 – Geraldton

Dome of Souls HMS Sydney Memorial – commemorating the loss of HMAS Sydney II and her crew of 645 men during a battle with a German ship during World War II on 19 November 1941 about 200km west of Shark Bay.

The roof of the dome has 645 metal seagulls – one for each sailor lost on the HMAS Sydney.

A stylised bow of a ship at the memorial.

A water feature with map and coordinates showing where the HMAS Sydney was sunk.

Black grnaite panels list the names of all servicemen lost.

A poignant reminder of those who were at home looking to the sea in hope.

The Big Marble – we had a good look through it to get a viewing of the Marble Cinematic Universe.

We had fun with the distorted images. We even saw Thanos.

We followed a flock of red-tailed black cockatoos by car through the streets of Geraldton until they landed in some trees. Female above.

Point Moore Lighthouse was the first all steel tower built on the mainland of Australia completed in 1878. Its construction is a riveting story.

Gone fishing

The Leaning Tree is south of Geraldton on the Brand Highway – River Red Gums buffeted by strong southerly winds have grown into horizontal shapes. Well, blow me down!

A mixed flock with an alpaca as security.

It took its job very seriously – the alpaca lips were pursed as a sign of disapproval of my presence.

Thought for the day

Sunset at Geraldton Port. The Grey Nomad stayed up all night to see where the sun went, and then it dawned on him.
