Way Away in WA 2023 – Day 5 – Eyre Highway

Port Augusta to Ceduna 468km across the top of the Eyre Peninsula.

Port Augusta has 109 wind turbines operating in the district. The ones above are at Lincoln Gap off the Eyre Highway. South Australia currently generates almost 70% of its electricity from renewable sources.

“Run away, run away!!!” Emu count today: just these two.

Iron Knob mine was the birth of the iron ore industry in Australia.

The Big Galah at Kimba. At 8 metres high, it is the beak performance of Big Things. It is one our favourite Big Things in Australia – sorry Big Pineapple, I know you will be crushed!

And now a durum roll for this one – Silo Art at Kimba. The mural celebrates the wheat industry around Kimba. The “canvas” for the artist was 60 metres wide and 25 metres high.

Statues of explorer Edward John Eyre and his guide are at the summit of Whites Knob gazing across the Kimba district. Eyre and his party left Port Lincoln for Western Australia in 1941 and passed through this area.

His guide asked Eyre if his compass was accurate and he replied, “Yes, to a degree…”

Pittosporum fruit

Big Farmer Statue at Wudinna. Like all wheat farmers, he was up to his ears in work.

Mt Wudinna – a large granite dome exposed by erosion of the surrounding land.

There is a short track to the base of the rock then the track has metal markers that lead straight up the rock face.

Turtle Rock from Mount Wudinna

View from the top – I wuddina thought I would see so much.

Big Ant at Poochera – ants don’t get sick – they have anty-bodies.

Scallop in the water below Ceduna jetty.

Pacific gull near the Ceduna jetty

A magnificent Pacific gull in flight

Ceduna Jetty sunset
