Old Butcher’s facade in Cobar. Thought for the day – If a vegan is complaining, are they having a beef?
The Barrier Highway is a favourite on our roadtrips in Australia. The easy 456km from Cobar to Broken Hill allows for time to stop at the many rest areas and take in the arid landscapes. It was the greenest we had ever seen it after all the rain this year. Also goats, goats and more goats (and I am not referring to Greatest Of All Time).
We didn’t hit any but had some close encounters of the herd kind.
The goats are breeding so much here they think they will take over the place but I think they are just kidding.

Emmdale is the only service station and sign of civilisation on the 260km drive from Wilcannia to Cobar.
It is famous for its gold standard cake made with 24 carrots.
Native daisies were massed in places – sometimes as far as the eye could see

The Darling River flowed again this year reaching nearly 10 metres in height here from being empty the previous January. The old bridge at Wilcannia was built in the 1890s.
Wilcannia has lovely old stone buildings like the Post Office built in 1880.

Roadside Rest Area – we had to use this in loo of a flushing toilet. It is one of the last windyloos that were once in every rest area on the Barrier Highway.
Broken Hill was built on the rich ore lode on the east side of town.
The Miners Memorial on the Line of Load at Broken Hill
The Big Chair at the Line of Load – you were once allowed to sit on this but the fun police have it cordoned off. That wasn’t very chairatable of them. We couldn’t stand it once but now we don’t give a sit.
