Our last morning – on the road from Moree to Goondiwindi

The Goondiwindi Library has a large display of memorabilia of the heroics of Gunsynd – The Goondiwindi Grey – champion race horse from the 1970s.

Lake Coolmunda’s level had dropped hugely since our last visit – we walked out to the edge of the lake where we would have been underwater on our last visit.

The road through Maryvale

Cunningham’s Gap is stark contrast to the vegetation of much of our journey with its towering rainforests on the Great Dividing Range. Fassifern Lookout has views east over Moogerah Dam.

An Albert’s lyrebird scurried off the edge of the track into the undergrowth beside us. We watched it scratch for food for a while before its disappeared further into the dense vegetation. We went to the Gap picnic area and saw a male satin bower bird and bellbirds.

It was good see a friendly face on the sign at Cunninghams Gap picnic area

After passing through the gap, we bid farewell to the Murray-Darling Basin and the outback….for now.
In total we travelled 7135km averaging 7.6 litres/100km in the 22 days.
