The Red Centre – Winter 2017 Day 21 – Kata Tjuta

21-9

Sunrise at Uluru to start the day. Here are some images around the base at sunrise.

21-11

21-12

21-13

21-14

Back to Yulara for a quick walk up the dune top to see Kata Tjuta in morning light. Kata Tjuta is 53km by road west of Yulara and our destination for the day.

21-10

21-15

Part of the way is a dune lookout with a view across a woodland of desert oaks to the many heads of Kata Tjuta (Kata is head and Tjuta many in Anangu language).

21-16

Uluru can also be seen from the dune top.

21-18

The Docker River Road leads to the Western Australian border, only 190km by road.

21-17

Another day.

21-19

Kata Tjuta from the  sunset view walking track.

21-21

The Valley of the Winds Walk is one of the great short walks in Australia.

21-20

21-22

The track leads through a broad gorge….

21-23

…pat the crumbly conglomerate…

21-1

…with locals watching the walkers exertion. Some plants encountered:

21-6

Daisy

21-7

Spearwood – Pandorea

21-5

Native Plum – Santalum

21-23b

The track frequently closes over the warmer months.

21-25

The view from the first lookout (Karu).

21-26

The conglomerate that makes Kata Tjuta

21-24

Down in the valley, the track turns at 90 degrees and ascends into another gorge. The track follows a creek bed in places.

21-27

Jumbled boulders remind walkers of the crumbly rock.

21-35

The walls close in

21-36

Spinifex grows across the tops of some of the domes.

21-34

The track proceeds deep into the gorge as the valley narrows.

21-29

21-33

A ridge is climbed to reveal the second lookout (Kaningana).

21-31

Daisies flowering in the gorge.

21-32

We re-trace our steps to complete the walk.

21-37

The Walpa Walk leads into another narrow gorge between the massive domes.

21-38

All sense of scale is lost.

21-39

Parts of the track are void of vegetation rendering a Mars-like environment.

21-40

The narrowing gorge leads to a lookout platform that faces back down the gorge.

21-42b

21-41

The upper part of the gorge –  a jumbled pile of boulders and pure stand of desert wonga vine/spearwood.

21-42

We walk out of the gorge as the sun sets.

21-44

Exiting the gorge reveals the last light of the sun on the domes.

21-43

Twilight glow on Kata Tjuta

21-45

The dune lookout in fading light brings a spectacular end to our day at Kata Tjuta.
